In this session, we’ll discuss the repressive ways in which governments and authorities interfere in the careers of bands and artists.

Just over 25 years ago there were still entire departments in East Berlin responsible for ensuring that popular music remain true to party principles in compliance with the Politburo’s requirements. As regards both music and lyrics, those in power had highly intractable ideas when it came to setting the parameters of artistic freedom.

Today, in other parts of the world, creative leeway in the field of pop music is still in a bad state. We’ll talk to those with first-hand experience of creative repression.
